Looking back, I can see there was one mindset shift that changed everything for me.
It wasn’t motivation.
It wasn’t confidence.
And it definitely wasn’t positive thinking.
I simply stopped waiting to be ready.
For years, I believed readiness was something that arrived before action. I thought one day I’d wake up feeling more confident, more certain, with more proof that the timing was right. Only then, I decided, would I allow myself to move forward.
But that day never came.
What I can see now - clearly, and with a lot of lived experience - is that readiness doesn’t come before action. It comes because of action.
When I trace back the biggest shifts in my life, this pattern is impossible to ignore. Becoming homeless as a teenager. Then, somehow, becoming a rally driving champion. Accidentally finding myself in television presenting. Enduring multiple extreme sporting events. Standing on stages now as a keynote speaker. And now training to row the Atlantic Ocean.
None of those moments began with certainty.
I wasn’t confident.
I wasn’t prepared.
And I definitely wasn’t comfortable.
What I was, every single time, was unsure and willing to act anyway.
We’re taught - subtly and constantly - that confidence is a prerequisite for movement. That courage comes first, and action follows neatly after. But real life doesn’t work that way. Confidence is built, not discovered. Clarity is earned, not granted.
If I’d waited until I felt “ready,” my life would have stayed very small.
The truth is, waiting often looks responsible on the surface. We tell ourselves we’re being sensible, cautious, strategic. But under that excuse, something else is usually hiding: fear of getting it wrong, fear of being judged, fear of finding out we’re not as capable as we hope.
So instead, we wait.
We wait for the right time.
We wait for permission.
We wait until we feel stronger.
But mental toughness isn’t about feeling strong or ready. It’s about choosing to move before you feel strong or ready.
It’s built in moments of uncertainty. It’s forged when you say yes without having every answer. It develops when you act while your hands are shaking and your self‑doubt is loud.
Every demanding event I’ve endured didn’t make me feel mentally tough before I started. They developed it because I started.
And that’s the shift most people never make.
If you’re waiting for the perfect time, you might be waiting for the wrong thing.
Because there is nothing special about a future date on the calendar. There is no magical point where fear vanishes and certainty replaces it. There is only today—and the choice to either engage with it or avoid it.
So I’ll ask you the same question I ask myself:
What’s wrong with today?
In my keynote, I share my story of developing mental toughness, but more importantly, I show people how they can do the same in their own lives. Not through hype or hollow motivation - but through practical mindset shifts that allow you to move now, not later.
You don’t need to feel ready.
You don’t need more confidence.
You just need to stop waiting.
Because readiness isn’t the start line.
Action is.
And you can start today.
