Sustainable High Performance Requires Looking After The Brain

My obsession with performance began the moment I entered the world of Motorsport, and it's never left me. Understanding what drives human potential, how we stretch our limits, and how small habit compound into extraordinary outcomes has always been at the heart of it all. This is why sustainable high performance requires looking after the brain.

Whether we’re talking about resilience, mindset, or mental toughness, one theme consistently emerges: sustainable high performance requires looking after the brain that makes it all possible.

That’s why this latest research into long‑term brain health caught my attention.

Several large, long‑running studies are now showing that a relatively small amount of cognitive speed training can reduce the risk of dementia by around 25% over the following 20 years.

These randomised controlled trials - involving more than 2,800 older adults - found that those who completed about 10 hours of 'speed‑of‑processing' exercises, plus booster sessions, were significantly less likely to be diagnosed with dementia later in life.

What’s fascinating is that it wasn’t memory games or reasoning drills that showed the strongest effect - only speed training produced a lasting benefit.

Researchers suggest this may be because 'speed‑of‑processing' work taps into implicit learning, helping the brain build automatic, resilient neural pathways that endure over decades.

This doesn’t mean brain games are a silver bullet. Experts still urge caution and more research. But the message is powerful:

> Even modest mental training can create long‑term cognitive advantages.

> Investing in your brain is one of the highest‑leverage performance decisions you can make.

So (as I bang on about this daily) small, consistent actions today can change your trajectory for decades.

So the question has to be 'What are you doing now, to strengthen your brain for the long run?'

Get in touch today to get started on those habits that lead to a sustainable high performance.
