How to Find a Motivational Speaker Who’s Impactful, Funny, and Far from Cringe

Let’s be honest, everyone’s been to that conference. The one where the “motivational speaker” bounds on stage like a human Tigger, throws out clichés, and leaves the audience cringing rather than inspired. It’s the kind of performance that makes people roll their eyes, not raise their game.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

A truly great motivational speaker doesn’t just hype up a room - they connect, challenge, and leave people thinking differently. They’re real, relatable, and yes - often funny. But their humour is grounded in truth, not gimmicks. Their stories resonate because they’ve lived them. And their impact lasts long after the applause fades.

So how do you find that kind of speaker?

1. Look for Lived Experience, Not Just Buzzwords

The best speakers don’t just talk about resilience, leadership, or mindset - they’ve lived it. I’ve spent my life pushing boundaries, from becoming a Champion Rally Driver in the World Rally Championship to working with elite performers and corporate teams on performance psychology.

When I speak, I draw from real experiences - moments of failure, triumph, grit and transformation. That’s what makes the message stick. It’s not theory. It’s the truth.

2. Find Someone Who Balances Depth with Humour

Humour is powerful, but only when it’s authentic. A speaker who can make people laugh and think is worth their weight in gold. I use humour to disarm, to connect, and to make tough topics accessible. But I never use it to distract from the message.

The goal isn’t to entertain, it’s to engage. And when people are smiling, they’re listening.

3. Seek Relatable, Not Robotic

Audiences don’t want perfection. They want real. They want someone who’s walked through fire and come out stronger. Someone who’s faced setbacks, doubts, and pressure...and found a way through.

That’s why I share stories that people can see themselves in. Whether it’s overcoming adversity, performing under pressure, or rebuilding confidence, I speak to the human experience behind the business challenge.

4. Avoid the Over-Rehearsed, Over-Polished Act

If a speaker feels like they’re performing at the audience instead of speaking to them, the connection is lost. The best talks feel like a conversation, not a script.

I pride myself on being present, responsive, and real. Every audience is different, and I tailor my message to meet them where they are, whether it’s a leadership summit, a sales kickoff, or a wellbeing event.

5. Look for Impact That Goes Beyond the Stage

A great speaker doesn’t just deliver a talk - they spark a shift. They leave people with tools, insights, and a renewed sense of possibility. My work is rooted in performance psychology, so I always give audiences practical strategies they can apply immediately.

It’s not just about motivation - it’s about transformation.
