1 CONTROL
This factor of Mental Toughness describes the sense of control a person believes they have of their life. Some people believe they have considerable influence over their working environment and career, and that they can make a difference and change things. They believe their input really matters, and they are motivated to make a full contribution.
Mentally sensitive people are more likely to feel that outcomes of events are outside of their personal control, and that they’re unable to exert any influence over themselves or others. They may feel their contribution is of little importance, and they not not play as full a part as they could.
2 COMMITMENT
Commitment refers to the extent to which a person is likely to persist with a goal or task. Some people can remain laser focused on completing a goal, and are more likely to persist until it is completed. These people will be able to handle and achieve things even when faced with tough deadlines and setbacks.
Other, more mentally sensitive, people when faced with a goal may become easily distracted, bored or divert their attention to other things. They avoid tough projects and tight deadlines, or chose to be free of them altogether.
3 CHALLENGE
People differ in their approach to a challenge. Some people consider challenges and problems to be opportunities, but some may be more likely to see a challenging situation as a threat, as they have a fear of failure or an aversion to effort. Mentally sensitive people may minimise their exposure to change and the problems that may bring, and will prefer to work in more stable environments.
Mental tough people may have a tendency to seek out a challenge, and see it as an opportunity for self development, and enjoy as constantly changing environment
4 CONFIDENCE
Some people that have high levels of confidence also have the self belief that they can successfully complete tasks that may be considered too difficult by individuals with similar ability, but lower confidence. Mentally tough people can experience a setback and take it in their stride. They keep their heads high when things go wrong, and their resolve may strengthen to do something.
At the other end of spectrum, mentally sensitive people will be unsettled by setbacks and will feel undermined by these. Their heads may ‘drop’ when faced with a challenging situation.
